On Hearing of the Recovery of Both

Henan and Hebei by the Imperial Army

Suddenly, from outside Jianmen,

came a word about the recovery of Ji Bei.

On hearing the news, I could not

help shedding tears all over my clothes.

Turning around and looking at my wife,

I saw no more sadness on her face.

Rolling up my poetry books mindlessly,

I turned my joy into ecstasy.

Let's drink to our hearts' content

and sing loudly in daylight;

let's go home together

and enjoy the enchanting scene of spring.

Why not start our sail now,

from the Ba Gorge through the Wu Gorge,

downstream to Xiangyang,

and then go up toward Luoyang.
